What is Land Search and Rescue?

Land Search and Rescue (LandSAR) is a dedicated national volunteer organization in New Zealand that provides essential search and rescue services to individuals who are lost, missing, or injured. Operating across a wide range of environments—from suburban to urban, rural to wilderness areas, as well as shorelines and caves—LandSAR's volunteers offer their expertise around the clock, seven days a week, through coordination with the New Zealand Police and the Rescue Coordination Centre.

With over 3,300 trained volunteers and 64 local groups across the country, LandSAR has a significant presence nationwide. These volunteers are not only skilled in general search and rescue but also specialize in disciplines such as Land Search and Rescue Dogs, CaveSAR, CanyonSAR, Alpine Cliff Rescue (ACR), and RiverSAR. These specialist teams are deployed in areas where their specific expertise is needed.

The organization is governed by the Land Search and Rescue Board, which consists of independent and elected Directors. The Board appoints a Chief Executive who manages the operations in alignment with the strategic direction provided by the Board. The Chief Executive is supported by a small team of salaried National Support Staff to ensure the smooth functioning of the organization's activities.

Combine the Team at Next72Hours have volunteered for Land Search and Rescue, the State Emergency Services in Australia and Police Search and Rescue for more than 40 years.
